Is Central Florida Conserving its Legacy?

Stewardship of Central Florida’s natural ecosystems, open spaces, and wildlife is an environmental, economic, and social imperative. The pressures of population growth, coupled with the potential impacts of climate change, bring greater responsibility to seek innovative solutions to regional sustainability. Central Florida’s legacy of environmental protection is strong, but much work remains for the region to address continuing threats to its natural assets and to use resources more efficiently.

One measure of a region’s commitment to the environment is the percent of land and water areas protected for public use today and for future generations. In Central Florida, 25 percent of the region’s coastal and land areas has been protected through local efforts – raising the region to world-class status and demonstrating the region’s commitment to sustainability.

Naturally Central Florida: Fitting the Pieces Together is the first document in a community process to protect and sustain the exceptional ecosystems of Central Florida. Seven “jewels of our natural world” in Central Florida are identified and showcased. These are “must save” places with regional, national, (and in some cases) global ecological and economic value that benefit Florida and the Nation.
