Environment

It all starts here -- and it all ends here, too. Our environment is the foundation of everything we do in Central Florida. Transportation, education, infrastructure, public safety -- all of it means nothing if our environment won't support us.

The purpose of this system is to find out how we can make our region's environment strong enough to support our efforts for a long, long time.

We will also help build a huge knowledge base of environmental information -- larger and more comprehensive than anything the region has ever seen.

Air quality, water quality, wildlife, urbanization, government and environmental economics will all be covered in this system.

Imagine what we could do if we all worked together to identify the issues facing our region and the collective resources we have at our disposal to overcome them.

A quote from Michael Gallis about the unique environmental concerns facing Central Florida:

"The Central Florida region is one of the most complex environmental settings of any urban region in North America. Weaving urbanization into this pattern is an extremely challenging situation. When you look at a composite of the Environment in the region, many systems seem to collide in Central Florida. The waterway pattern is very complex as well. The picture of the intermingling of population density and conservation lands is remarkable."

Here’s what some concerned residents had to say:

"Green space – how much of it is actually protected, how much will be protected twenty years from now?"

"Why is there no connection between potable water and growth? What about pollution?"

"Multiple jurisdictions must find a way to work together for the region as a whole."

"Eco-tourism is the largest growing element of tourism at present."

"We have been spoiled by cheap water – that will change."
