Healthcare

Keeping the Central Florida economy rolling means keeping Central Floridians healthy.

Few regional issues have gotten more recent attention than healthcare. From long-term to preventive care, Central Floridians have identified the business of staying healthy as one of their primary concerns.

Where are our hospitals located? Where are new ones being built? Are different areas of the region communicating with each other to make sure medical facilities are where they need to be?

How do our medical assets stack up to those in other areas? How much medical research is ongoing in our region and how can our other industries support it? What about links between healthcare, education, workforce and economic development? Is the region taking full advantage of its resources?

Take a look at a map of the hospitals around the state by number of beds and the location of statewide medical schools.  Another issue facing our region is the necessity for trauma centers and their varied locations.

A quote from Michael Gallis about the current state of healthcare in Central Florida:

"Rapidly growing economic and population centers have a dramatic affect on healthcare, as will global connectivity. Enormous strides are being made in the healthcare industry and the competition is becoming more complex. Two of the three largest hospital groups in Florida are located in Orlando. Medical schools appear nicely spaced throughout Florida, but do not necessarily match population densities."

Here’s what some concerned residents had to say:

"Quality of care, access to care – including uninsured and tourists – and dealing with unhealthy populations should be areas of focus."

"Healthcare institutions in the region need to be globally competitive."

"Who will be left behind as the region moves forward?"

"Where is individual responsibility for healthcare and prevention?"

"Healthcare institutions need to collaborate rather than compete."
