Transportation

No other issue has more immediate regional impact than transportation. To move Central Florida to the next level, we must look at our transportation network from a whole new perspective.

Roads, railroads, rivers, seaports, buses and bikes -- it will all be covered in this system. But it will all be examined like never before. We will learn how each of these systems work together to move people from one end of this region to another.

We will also look at how our region fits into national and global transportation patterns. How do people use Central Florida to reach other destinations around the world? Can small changes in our transportation network at home have far-reaching impact abroad?

For the 2002 legislative session METROPLAN ORLANDO assembled its transportation priorities based on the results of citizen surveys. The issues (in order of priority) are:

Transportation Disadvantaged Programs

Fair Share Distribution of Existing Rental Car Surcharge

Funding for Interstate-4

Transportation Outreach Program

Florida High-Speed Rail System

Local Option Rental Car Surcharge

Please visit the METROPLAN website for complete survey results.

Here’s what some concerned residents had to say about transportation in Central Florida:

"Is the transient nature of residents contributing to the transportation problem?"

"Development around universities affects traffic patterns."

"Get beyond globalization and think about the issue of sustaining our economy."

"Roads don’t solve the problem."

"Transportation does not only support economic development, but also quality of life."
