Gauging Our Progress -
The Central Florida Scorecard

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

I am so pleased to announce our newest project, in partnership with the Florida Chamber Foundation, and generously funded by four organizations: The Florida High Tech Corridor Council, Orlando Regional REALTORS Association, the University of Central Florida Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies and VHB Miller Sellen.

Our regional leaders have long asked, "How can we make our community a better place to live, work, play and visit?" Today the region gains a new tool for this quest with the official launch of The Central Florida Scorecard, a pilot project between myregion.org and Florida Chamber Foundation.

On the myregion.org website, you'll find six dials that provide visual gauges showing how we're doing as a region in these general categories and their individual indicators:

Central Florida Scorecard

  • High school graduation rates

  • College attainment

  • Average annual wage

Innovation and Economic Development

  • Business starts

  • High-tech industry employment

  • Export value

Infrastructure and Growth Leadership

  • Water consumption

  • Daily vehicle miles traveled

  • Air quality

Business Climate and Competitiveness

  • Tax rate

  • Unemployment rate

  • Broadband access

Civic and Governance Systems

  • Charitable contributions

  • Voter participation

Quality of Life and Quality Places

Click on each dial to dig deeper. Scroll down the page and find out more by studying the individual indicators.

Today, each dial or category contains three indicators. As the project grows, you'll see more. Which additional indicators would interest you the most? Would you like to see how the Central Florida region and its seven counties compare in eighth-grade math performance, patents issued, building permits, retail activity, government debt, crime rate?

Visit The Florida Scorecard to see what the Florida Chamber Foundation is measuring on a statewide basis. You can also see more information about your specific county. Click on the County Data tab, select an indicator, and click Update Chart.

Explore both sites and let us know how you'd like us to expand The Central Florida Scorecard. This tool is for you, and we want your feedback.

"We're excited about this new tool because it will help us better understand the economic issues that are affecting our quality of life," said Dr. Diane Trees, director of the University of Central Florida Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies, one of the organizations helping fund the project. "To create a shared future, all of our counties and municipalities need to understand how they fit into the bigger picture of our region and our state."

In addition to Dr. Diane Trees, I'd like to publicly acknowledge and thank Randy Berridge with the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, Michael Kidd, with the Orlando Regional REALTORS Association, and Jim Sellen, Steve Miller and Michael Carragher with VHB Miller Sellen for their continued leadership and encouragement on this project. Too, a special thank you to Dr. Dale Brill and his team at the Florida Chamber Foundation for his statewide leadership and regional connection to the issues "that matter most!"

The Central Florida Scorecard will help myregion.org, one of four lines of business of the Central Florida Partnership, continue focusing on "Regional Research and Resolves" to enable the dialogue that shapes the region's future. Working with Orlando, Inc. (Regional Entrepreneurship), BusinessForce (Public Policy Advocacy), and Leadership Orlando (Regional Leadership), the Central Florida Partnership is moving "Ideas to Results."
